- Giant
- Scott

- Yeti

- MTB built to purpose

What is the Bikes Intended Purpose? With so many brands and styles to choose from, it is helpful to break the MTB category into smaller bite sized groups to offer a simple way to identify the right bike based upon its intended use. The categories for MTB are: - General Purpose
- Downhill
- Hardtail Cross Country
- Dual suspension Cross Country
While you can get a general purpose mountain bike from around $350 (read description below), the performance range of mountain bikes start from $1000. The primary enhancements found on bikes in the performance range include: - Clip-in Pedals
- Race Geometry Frame
- Better Brakes ( typically full hydraulic disc brakes)
- Better Forks
- Enhanced Drive Train
"The key purpose of these enhancements are greater longevity; lightness of parts and better performance".

General Purpose - A suburban trail blazer that will allow you to jump gutters, ride off the tarmac and even tackle the odd fire trail on the weekend, this bike delivers on fun and budget. From around $350 you can get a very nice bike, that for your average weekend warrior, is more than sufficient for fun and fitness.
Downhill - Not something you will find at the supermarket, downhill MTBs are specialised machines built for hard core down hill action. They have extra heavy duty frames, HD suspension with longer travel, disk brakes with HUGE rotors for extreme braking and all round stronger components. In the right environment, it is scary what people do on these bikes. If you are into massive drops, big air, technical and all round crazy down hill action - this is your bike.

TIP: Due to the robustness of downhill bikes, they tend to be a little heavier which makes them less suited to general cycling. If you are after a bike to do it all, a hard tail might be a good choice.

Dual Suspension Cross Country - Not as heavy duty as down hill bikes but built to a similar theme and the same exacting quality, dual suspension MTBs or 'Duallys' are more rideable in more situations and are all round great fun for a starting price of around $2500. If you are looking to ride serious trails and single tracks with some madness thrown into the journey, a Dually will offer considerably more comfort than a hard tail MTB and will allow you to ride rough and absorb much of the punishment through the suspension rather than your body.
Hard-Tail Cross Country - There are several advantages that a single suspension or 'hard-tail' cross-country mountain bike offers over a dual suspension cross-country mountain bike. - Less moving parts meaning less maintenance
- Lighter frame
- Greater value for money
- No loss of power via suspension to the back wheel
ComparisonsIf you compare a hard tail with a dually, you might be surprised at just how much that extra suspension costs. For example the GIANT TRANCE cross-country is approximately $2495. Compare this to the hard-tail equivalent - a GIANT XTC2 which retails for $1695. Pretty much every thing is the same except for the addition of the rear suspension. You get the same wheels, drive train, brakes and forks yet save yourself over $800! MTB Brands @ Blackman BicyclesBelow are just some of the brands stocked at Blackman Bicycles.
