The BMX was indeed the bike that would take you anywhere in the 80's. Before the days of Mountain Bikes, BMX ruled supreme. With the advent of the MTB, the modern BMX has been able to shuck off the all purpose off road label and evolve into a finely crafted machine which is broken into four specialised categories.

Street BMX start from around $259 (GIANT METHOD 03) for your standard high tensile steel to $1500 bikes with full Japanese chrome alloy tubing, sealed bearing hubs and cassette rear hubs (for better engagement and greater flexibility of drive train set-up) as well as all round better components. Freestyle BMX are designed tough and are considered by the freestyle fraternity as being the only all-out hard-core extreme riding machine. Typical attributes of a freestyle BMX include:
- 14mm Axels
- 3 Piece Crank
- 48 Spoke Wheel
- Heavy Duty Frame and Weld Joints
- Foot Pegs on front and or rear wheels for tricks
- Brake Giros for bar spining tricks

Race
Race BMX are very different to freestyle BMX and of course these are much lighter and made specifically for speed and agility ( both in the air and on the ground). BMX race bikes start from $449 to top end competition bikes at $1200+.
Race BMX are popular with children of all ages and adult which might explain the broad base of sizes which ensure a good fit for every rider.
